What is rehabilitation?

Updated: Apr 10, 2022

Rehabilitation is a set of measures to assist the individual who experience or is likely to experience disability to achieve and maintain the highest possible level of function, independence, and quality of life possible. The goal is to return to activity and minimise the likelihood of an event occurring again. The patient is active in their recovery program.

Does rehab always include a gym program?

Every rehab plan depends on the individual. Everyone has different abilities.

  • Accessibility: some people might not be able to afford a gym membership, others may have access to a gym

  • Needs: some patients might not need rehab (e.g acute condition)

  • Abilities: some might be in so much pain, or simply unable to exercise

  • Apprehension of the environment: some people might not be comfortable in the gym environment

What is the goal of rehab?

Getting someone back to their pre-injury state is not

always the best option for the patient.

e.g. If a person was overweight and not doing much during their days, the aim is to improve that person's overall health and wellbeing as well as improve the injury side of things.
